River Reports

Sept. 18, 2016

Elk River fall fishing is once again at is best not only this season but the best it has been for over a decade.

Dry fly is exceptional good with loads of October Caddis, BWO'S, Flav's, Black Ants, Beetles, and some hoppers.

Nymph fishing has been very good on October Caddis pupa, Bird of Prey #10, Golden Stones size 8, BWO nymphs in size 14,16.

Streamer fishing is also very good for Cutts and Bulls. Bigger Bull trout have moved up into the feeder creeks to spawn but the Elk has loads of the Juvinile fish in the 24" range that just don't stop fighting and eating flies.

Flies to use are Muddy Buddies in white, Black, Olive. Articulating flies in White and Olive have been good. Trick or Treat wooly buggers size 4,6.

The Elk is very low and clear so wading is easy from almost anywhere.

The lower Elk is fishing very good with loads of West Slope Cutthroats dropping back into the Elk for the winter as the flow rates have dropped.

September 3rd, 2016

The Elk has been fishing very well the last few days even with the constantly changing weather. The cold weather and rain has been producing large hatches of October Caddis and small mayflies. In the mornings Nymphing has been productive as it is now normally too cold for Dry Fly until around 11 when things begin to warm up. After it heats up Dry Fly fishing will be productive all day. On hot days Ants and Beetles will still be very effective.

Suggested Dries for the Elk: Parachute Hares Ear, GT Adams, Para Purple Haze, Crystal Stimulator Orange, Tri Wing Caddis Orange, Orange PMX, Black Fat Albert, Fire Beetle, Parachute Ant Black.

Suggested Nymphs: October Bird of Prey, BH Hares Ear, Red Copper John (Size 8-10), Brown Copper John (size 8-10).

The Bull River is now quite small but fishing really well for those walking and wading. Green Drakes continue to fire off up there along with Ants and Beetles. The Bull is cold and will typically fish well all day after 11am. The fish are a bit smaller compared to the Elk, however, there is more fish and they are eager to eat on top.

Suggested Dries for the Bull: Fire Beetle, Black Fat Albert, Parachute Ant Black, Ext body Green Drake, Para Olive Haze.
